Testing Chocolate Chip Cookies Learning Activity
     

Overview

Testing Chocolate Chip Cookies is a hands-on activity to help students learn about some of the work related to the Environmental and Agricultural Systems career field. One of the objectives of the activity is to provide the opportunity for students to do work tasks and then to reflect upon those tasks. The exploration activity is set up to be completed in one class period. The activity could used to introduce the career field.

Materials and Supplies

  • Three different brands of chocolate chip cookies with enough so each group receives two of each brand. (Be sure to check for allergies to nuts and other ingredients).
  • Paper towels.
  • Droppers and containers to hold a small amount of water.
  • Scales to weigh cookies and chocolate chips.
  • Handouts to record data regarding the quality of the cookies .

Instructions for Educators

1. Have students/clients work as teams of food scientists. Assign each team to one of the companies that makes a brand of the chocolate chip cookies.
2. Give each team two cookies from each brand and have the droppers and water and scales available for their use.
3. Have each team complete the “Quality Control Data Sheets”.
4. When the teams have completed the quality control activity, have them report to the vice president in charge of quality control. Remind them to cite their conclusions and make recommendations for improving their chocolate chip cookies.

  • Have them do an oral presentation to the vice president; or
  • Have them write a formal letter to the vice president.

5. Have them do “Thinking about Testing Chocolate Chip Cookies”.
6. Discuss how interest, abilities, and skills are related to career options and choices.
7. Have the students/clients save the “Testing Chocolate Chip Cookies” activity in the career portfolios.
8. An optional activity is to have the students/clients, who are interested in this career field, explore occupations related to this activity or the Environmental and Agricultural Systems field.

Testing Chocolate Chip Cookies Worksheet Instructions


1. You are a member of a team of food scientists who are given the task of making recommendations about how to improve your company’s chocolate cookies.
2. You will complete an experiment where the team will compare your company’s cookies to those from two other companies.
3. Once the experiment and quality control data is collected, you will be asked to give an oral or written recommendation to the vice president in charge of quality control. Your presentation will include your conclusions from the quality control experiment and recommendations for improving your company’s cookies.
